The honest comparison

What Port Charlotte patients are offered
locally vs. what Dr. Katsevman offers

This is not about criticizing other surgeons. It is about being transparent with Charlotte County patients about what is available 45 minutes south — and why some drives are worth taking.

What many patients find locally

Fusion as the default for stenosis & spondylolisthesisWhen TOPS and motion-preserving decompression aren’t offered, fusion becomes the answer by default — whether or not the slip is stable or fusion is genuinely needed.

No disc replacement optionCervical and lumbar disc replacement require specific fellowship training and implant certification. Practices that don’t offer them rarely mention them as alternatives to fusion.

Open surgery with large incisionsMulti-inch incisions, muscle stripping, multi-day hospital stays for procedures that can be done outpatient through a quarter-inch incision.

Brief appointments, limited explanationBusy practices leave patients uncertain about their diagnosis, their options, and what surgery actually involves. Questions go unanswered.

No biologic augmentationPRP, BMAC, and Barricaid annular closure are not routinely offered despite evidence supporting their benefit in disc and fusion surgery.

What patients say

The 5-star reviews tell you what to expect

Port Charlotte patients ask: is it worth the drive? Read what patients who made that same decision have to say — across Google, Healthgrades, WebMD, and U.S. News. The answer is consistent.

Why patients drive past closer options

The reviews share a consistent thread: patients feel heard, informed, and treated as individuals — not as a scheduled procedure. The practice takes the time to explain what is happening, what is causing the symptoms, and what all the options are — including the ones that mean less surgery, not more.

For patients from Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda who have been to multiple doctors, received conflicting recommendations, and still don’t feel certain about what they need — this is the consultation that changes the picture. Many leave with a different recommendation than everything they heard before. Some leave needing less surgery. A few leave needing more urgency than they realized. All leave with clarity.

The drive is 45 minutes. The appointment is unhurried. The difference is real.

Where surgery is performed: Surgical procedures are performed at hospital facilities in Naples, where Dr. Katsevman has access to the latest surgical technology — including robotics and navigation for fusion cases, intraoperative CT for SI joint fusion, and neuromonitoring for all cervical procedures. The drive to Naples for surgery is approximately 75–80 minutes from Port Charlotte.

After surgery: Most procedures are same-day discharge. You will need a driver — many patients arrange to stay locally overnight before the return trip, or family members make the drive comfortable. The minimally invasive nature of the surgeries means most patients are genuinely comfortable travelling home the same day.

Questions from Port Charlotte & Punta Gorda patients

What patients ask before making the drive

Is it really worth driving 45 minutes for a spine consultation?
+

For many patients — yes, significantly. The honest reason is that the surgical options available at this practice simply do not exist locally in Charlotte County. TOPS motion-preserving surgery for spondylolisthesis, minimally invasive tubular laminectomy without fusion, cervical and lumbar disc replacement, and the 3R Discectomy with Barricaid annular closure all require specific fellowship training and implant certification. If none of these were offered locally and you were told you need fusion, the 45-minute drive may be what stands between you and hardware you didn’t need. Many patients who make this drive leave with a fundamentally different surgical plan than what they were offered closer to home.

What is the consultation actually like? Will I actually see Dr. Katsevman?
+

The appointment is not rushed. Whether you see Dr. Katsevman directly or a member of his clinical team for an initial visit, imaging is reviewed carefully, options are explained clearly, and questions are answered. For complex surgical cases or second opinions where imaging is already available, Dr. Katsevman reviews the case and is involved in the treatment planning. The 5-star reviews on Google, Healthgrades, and WebMD consistently describe the same experience — time, attention, and genuine care from the practice. Read the reviews at floridaspinesurgeon.org/reviews.

I’ve been told I need spinal fusion in Port Charlotte. Is there an alternative?
+

Possibly — and it depends entirely on your specific diagnosis, imaging, and anatomy. For Grade I spondylolisthesis with spinal stenosis, the TOPS System is an FDA-proven alternative to fusion with dramatically better clinical outcomes. For stable Grade I spondylolisthesis without true instability, minimally invasive laminectomy without fusion can relieve the nerve compression without hardware. For degenerative disc disease at one or two levels, lumbar disc replacement may preserve motion instead of fusing. The first step is a consultation where Dr. Katsevman reviews your specific imaging and tells you honestly which options apply to your anatomy and which don’t.

Can I start with a telemedicine consultation from Port Charlotte before driving down?
+

Yes — and many patients prefer this. Upload your MRI images before the appointment, and Dr. Katsevman will review them during a video call from your home in Port Charlotte or Punta Gorda. You will get a real answer about your diagnosis, what the options are, and what Dr. Katsevman would recommend — without making the drive until you have decided to proceed. For patients who are not yet certain whether they want surgery, or who want to understand the options before committing to a visit, telemedicine is an excellent first step. Most patients who start with telemedicine follow up in person within a week or two.

Does Dr. Katsevman accept my insurance?
+

Dr. Katsevman works with most major insurance plans — including Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, United Healthcare, Cigna, and others. Charlotte County patients are welcome. Our team will verify your specific benefits before any appointment and walk you through prior authorization requirements where applicable. We also work with out-of-network arrangements and GAP exception requests. The goal is to make access to this level of care as straightforward as possible for patients making the drive from Charlotte County.

"Patients from Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda drive past dozens of medical offices to reach this practice. That commitment deserves something in return: a thorough review of the imaging, an honest assessment, and a real answer — not a rushed consultation and a default surgical plan."
